Wanted: Killer Whale ID photos We have learned a surprising amount from quality photographs of killer whales loaned to us by mariners. These photographs are particularly valuable when taken in areas such as Kodiak Island, Kachemak Bay, the outer Kenai Peninsula, the Aleutian Islands and the Yakutat area. The known ranges of several groups of whales have been extended because of photographs we have received. Older photographs are also useful and can provide invaluable historical information on these whales.
Photographs must be sideviews that clearly show the dorsal fin, and preferably, the grey saddle patch. Pictures taken on the left side of the whale are most valuable. The name of the photographer, the date and the location should be written on the photograph or attached to it. Silde transparencies are also useful. We will return the photographs within a few weeks and provide you with information on any whales that could be identified. Photographs can be sent to:
